On the 19th of October there was a distinct smell of popcorn on Hanbury Street.  This could only mean one thing: the exclusive onedotzero screening at wieden + kennedy’s very own event space.

A select few had the chance to see (from the confines of a deck chair, which were surprisingly comfortable!) some of the best content from this year’s festival.

The evening kick-started with an introduction from Tony Davidson and Shane Walter – their friendship led to our creating the onedotzero’s festival identity this year.

‘Craftwork’ was shown, showcasing a revival in a handcrafted approach to motion arts and film.  And then there was H5′s award-winning short film LOGORAMA.  Utterly amazing, an animated short film made entirely from hundreds of brand logos.  Its no surprise that the film picked up an award at Cannes this year.

There was a lot of ‘that’s the best thing I’ve seen since….’ and ‘i need to get my hands on a copy…’ going on.  We also showcased our interactive installation so guests could see their own personal messages formed by live online conversation – naturally it didn’t take Ben Walker long to use the ‘c’ word….

The night ended on a good note when Karsten Schmidt (the genius behind our application) announced that the identity software is ‘open source’ and has now been officially released to the digital community.  There’ll be more about this later.

onedotzero_adventures in motion 2009/10 is now on tour around the world, and the interesting thing is that our identity continues to live and breathe.  Nice.

on arriving in zurich it was clear that the film festival had captured the imaginations of the entire city. a ‘turbulent’ turn in events wasn’t going to stop locals, film fanatics and renowned guests alike from enjoying the best in international features, documentaries and german language films.

onedotzero were thrilled to be back for the fifth year and it was standing room only at the opening night of onedotzero screenings. the weekend kicked off early on thrusdya night with onedotzero_ch – a local talent programme dedicated to celebrating short films, music videos and commercial work produced by swiss creatives. 14 of the shorts went head to head in competition, judged by the audience who voted via text message. the winning film, “dixie trixi” by gian klainguti and oliver conrad, had been created in just 48 hours at Stuttgart’s Festival of Animated Film 2008. the lucky directors won a trip for two to london to visit onedotzero_adventures in motion 2010 festival, 3000 CHF worth of sound production work on their next film and a healthy supply of striker beer. watch the winning film:

i-design 09

Author: onedotzero

the i-design 09 conference took place in the university of westminster on the 24th of sep with inspiring and enlightening presentations from 9 in the morning until 7.30 in the evening, it was intense, fascinating and an exhaustingly full day!
made up of expert discourse, debate and exploration of how digital technologies are blurring the boundaries between the passive and interactive experience of visual art, entertainment, environmental design and the built environment.
highlights included : the panel debate entitled ‘interface: the tactile and sensory conversation’ and tim milne of matterbox discussing how digital media has forced him to think quite differently about the medium of print, and in his view is enabling us to develop a different relationship with those same printed artifacts that we have hitherto viewed primarily as information carriers.
the conference was also punctuated with ‘5d interludes’ dispersed throughout the day, as a snappy counterpoint to the in-depth panel discussions, and keynote talks. this is where practitioners in interactive design were given just five minutes to tantalise and excite us with snapshots of their work; these included jens of visionlabz and lichtfaktor and tali krakowski of wet design with presentation film clips of installations in las vegas and dubai which were very impressive.

AND Festival, Liverpool

Author: onedotzero

on 23-27th sept, a couple of us from the onedotzero team headed up north to liverpool, to experience abandon normal devices [AND], a new festival that welcomes audiences to experience the best in new cinema and media art. fresh from our own festival at london’s bfi southbank, the opportunity to experience and indulge in this festival as a member of the audience was too tempting! www.andfestival.org.uk

no venue in the city was left untouched by the AND festival fever, activity and publicity, in a celebration that spilled from the screen and galleries into the landscape and imaginations of the north west.

with a healthy selection of film screenings, talks + workshops, exhibitions and events, all venues throughout the city joined forces to host this festival encouraging visitors, artists + filmmakers of the city, new and old, a platform to engage.

with just a couple of days to absorb the festival delights, we dived straight in:
- an intense workshop on ‘whole body interaction’ a hands-on workshop in motion capture, showcasing technology developed for wirelessly capturing body motion.
- going on an unusual bike ride through the city with any early demo of blast theories, ‘rider spoke’, which continues their fascination with how games and new communication technologies are creating hybrid social spaces.
- sitting back and witnessing the mesmerisingly powerful and educational 1915 KKK propaganda film ‘birth of a nation’ one of the most revered and reviled films ever made, being re-edited live by dj spooky in ‘rebirth of a nation’.
- and a personal highlight, ‘fantoscopic fair’ event hosted by ‘the kazimer’, a unique night mixed with dance, music and multi-media performance in the radical site-specific travelling carnival of amusements!

returning back to the big smoke, we left AND festival to wind down in it’s temporary liverpool home, while plans are already afoot for the april arm of the festival, when AND heads for the hills to visit a series of remote and rural locations in cumbria, lancashire and online presented by folly. so if you’re up in the north – you still have chance to abandon your normal devices and join in with the festival fun!
