onedotzero_cascade Day 5

Author: onedotzero

After an exciting five days this year’s onedotzero_cascade workshop has come to an end at the Red Gallery

Today the cascaders will be presenting their ideas of living in the layered city to a panel of industry professionals that include Kevin Palmer (Kin), Orlando Mathias (AllofUs), Paul Springer (YCC), Fiorella Rietti (LBi), Nicole Yershon and Will Harvey (Ogilvy), Rhiannon James (D&AD) and onedotzero‘s Sophie Walter. Each group will present their idea and receive feedback from the industry professionals, which will help towards the groups final presentations on Thursday 24 November 2011 during the onedotzero_adventures in motion festival at the BFI Southbank in London.

Join us to celebrate the results with presentations, debates and processes and concepts. This is the place to discover some of 2011 most talented newcomers. This year two of the groups will be awarded a fund from IdeasTap to go towards the development and creation of their ideas.

The presentations will be followed by cascade panel, creative industries: the next generations
Without great new talent the creative industries would face a desperate future, particularly at a time of monumental social and economic change. Creativity is, after all, a driver to success and well-being and uncertain times can open up as many opportunities as they close. That talent exists. But we need to identify and nurture it and let it fly. College is one route to design, but are there others? And what do emerging designers really need to face the challenges ahead, whatever their particular circumstances? These are among the themes to be addressed at onedotzero’s cascade symposium. Design activist Wayne Hemingway will set the agenda in his keynote speech and the issues will be debated by an eminent panel comprising forward-thinking tutors, seasoned practitioners and newer collectives. Add presentations by graduates from the 2011 Cascade programme and we can expect a treat. The future could be brighter than you think. Lynda Relph-Knight

onedotzero_cascade Day 4

Author: onedotzero

Actors Keith Wallis and Tom Zieball kick started Day 4 of cascade with a soft skills workshop. The workshop highlighted the common pitfalls in presentations such as eye contact, body language and vocal clarity. The workshop also included group exercises including stage combat theatre training by stage combat theatre co-ordinator Keith Wallis. The skills learnt in this mornings session prepared the groups for tomorrow’s presentations in front of an industry panel at the Red Gallery.

A few key points to remember when you are presenting in a team are:

1. Communicate and listen
2. Share your presence
3. Feed off each others positive energy
4. Support and help each other

Thank you to Keith and Tom for their fantastic work!

onedotzero_cascade Day 3

Author: onedotzero

It’s the end of day 3 at onedotzero_cascade and the groups are half way through the week’s programme.

This mornings session kicked off with a presentation about digital collaboration by multidisciplinary team at Guardian Digital. The team; Alastair Dant (Lead Interactive Technologist), Jonathan Richards (Interactive Editor), Alex Graul (Interactive Developers) and Mariana Santos (Motion Graphics Designer) gave an insightful presentation into how to build a multidisciplinary web publishing team and focus on the challenges of working in such a team based around workflow and how this can be easily managed. Trust and communication were key points made through the presentation – something clear throughout Alastair, Jonathan, Alex and Mariana’s presentation.

The Guardian Digital team continued to work with the cascaders into the afternoon answering questions and feeding back on each groups ideas for this year’s brief ‘delve_living in the layered city‘.

A massive thank you to the Guardian Digital team for sharing their time and would appreciate any feedback on their twitter pages; @marysaints @ajdant @jonnyrichards @AlexGraul

The afternoon continued with feedback sessions with practitioners Matt Wade (kin) and Derek Yates (Camberwell College of Arts). Once again the 40 cascaders left with their creative heads buzzing for the day.

onedotzero_cascade Day 2

Author: onedotzero

Day 2 at the Red Gallery for onedotzero_cascade, which left 40 creative brains buzzing with new insight, knowledge and inspiration as they left for the day.

The morning session kicked off with an interactive presentation by Samuel Payne from Mother London. Sam’s presentation focused on the importance and understanding of insight and how to approach a brief and generate ideas. Tasks included a 20 minute brainstorm to find a way to make a non alcoholic beer cool. Impossible? All five of the cascade groups came up with great ideas from big bottle beers to re-branding non alcoholic beer changing it to bearbeer bottles for light humour. The morning session ended with laughter and a new insight on how to form concepts and progress to the next stage of developing their ideas for this years cascade brief.

The day continued with mentoring sessions with Derek Yates from Camberwell College of Arts to feedback on each groups ideas on the brief ‘delve_living in the layered city‘.
