Syn Emergence is a project which examines my own associative relationships between sound, form and space.

The project is constructed according to a range of specific sonic and spatial scale rule sets (micro, component, meso and macro) which I designed as part of a cross-disciplinary notation/cartographic system.

We were commissioned by musician Jude Greenaway to create a video for his track 'She Goes', to be featured on his album 'Yellow Machines'. We were involved in all stages from concept to completion of the video, which was shot with our frequent collaborator James Medcraft.

The piece adds an organic quality to experimental animations of light, adding another dimension to the music, whilst drawing attention to the unseen beauty in the surrounding environment. The video was shot both in our studio using examples of local flora from the future Olympic Games site and nearby Hackney Marshes, and in the living natural environment of an Essex forest.

In post production, all the light bulbs used in the original footage required tracking and subsequent replacement, wire removal, stabilisation and some scripting to generate a flock of lights that would appear to be consciously navigating through the foliage.

The video was selected by visual culture publication File Magazine to be featured in their second bi-annual issue.

This is a personal project that would not have been possible without the support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Thanks to the entire team for their generous access during training exercises and patrols this Summer. Since the Service began in 1973, it has carried out more than 21,000 missions ranging from urgent patient transfers to dangerous search and rescue missions.

This film is 100% 'real', but there are some new techniques for me here, such as using time lapse to create the illusion of forward movement for the helicopter ocean scenes. These flight sequences would not be possible without the skill and patience of Chief Pilot Peter Yates. Thanks also to Trevor Cracknell (for getting wet!) and Family.
