latest project: freefall

Freefall is a visual sting which draws a parallel between the virtual and physical worlds - drawing a direct link between the ICA New Media Centre and virtual (digital) space. Freefall is a direct comment and illustration of onedotzero's exploration of digital film and creativity.

The various visual elements of the Freefall short videowork are made up from the ICA's plans for the New Media Centre and text primarily from the Theory of Derive by the Situationiste Internationale. The urban activity of derive - or 'drifting' - is transposed into the virtual space with Freefall. Freefall can be seen as the virtual equivalent of derive, which is used here to illuminate and comment on the relationship between physical and virtual terrain.

form
Freefall is a finished digital artwork in it's own right, while directly feeding into the democratic and interactive nature of digital work. The raw digital files, used to make up the final cut of the sting, will be released and available online. These can then be used by visitors to 'remix' the work using the visual elements provided.

The sting will live as a finished product on the ICA intranet, as part of onedotzero cinema programmes, and, as in the case of the launch, as a visual installation.

installation
The installation builds on the sting by producing a panoramic screen centred on the looping 45-second Freefall video, and bordered on the left and right by stills projections of text based on the 'virtual derive' of freefall. The text based within the video is complemented by the projected text which contextualises the work.
